  • June Yard of the Month

Congratulations to Bob and Cathy Robbins on Capricorn for being named our Yard of the Month! Bob and Cathy are original residents of Fountainwood and their yard has evolved through many different looks over the years. Ten years ago they decided it was time yet again for their lawn to undergo a change and this time they opted for a low maintenance, drought tolerant look. Very forward thinking of them, given our current water restriction situation! Thanks to artificial turf the lawn looks perfectly manicured year round. These days it seems like every other yard is turf (ours included), but at the time of its installation turf was not a popular choice. In fact, you could argue the Robbins' were trend setters. They know of at least one neighbor who decided on turf as a direct result of their yard, and today we now live in that former neighbors home and reap the benefits of its beauty and non-existent maintenance. A gardening enthusiast himself, Bob selected and maintains much of the yard himself. Most of the plants used are drought resistant, including the yards prized focal point, a beautiful Strawberry Tree. Hanging Geranium baskets line the walkway to the front door and are the perfect accent piece. Indian Hawthorne bushes, China Roses, Asparagus Ferns, Azaleas, Stonecrops, Jasmine, and Heavenly Bamboo round out the rest of the botanical contributions in this pristine and perfectly tailored yard. Again, a big thank you to the Robbins! Thank you for sharing your yard with us all. • Restaurant of the Month- Agoura Village Bakery

Big news for you fellow avid Agoura Village Bakery lovers, after many months of warning, the Agoura Village Bakery has officially MOVED to their new location next to sister restaurant, Maral Cuisine! The Village Bakery (as we call it, didn't realize "Agoura" was in their name until writing this article and seeing their website for the first time) has been a neighborhood favorite for our family since we moved to Fountainwood 5 years ago. We're there more than I should probably admit... but hey, support local, right? It is my go to mommy/daughter pre-playground brunch date on Sunday mornings and my quick coffee fix most days in-between. It's popularity within the community is strong, as you'll never find yourself the only one in the store. A coffee house and bakery above all else, Village Bakery offers a multitude of coffees, teas, and smoothies as well as a large array of delicatessen treats and breads. Their large breakfast menu is available all day and features some of the most indulgent pancakes and waffles you have ever heard of. We haven't tried everything on the menu yet, but we are well on our way. The problem is everything we have tried is so delicious that we just keep ordering the same things over and over! Here are some of my family's favorite Village Bakery dishes: Ham, Egg, and Cheese Croissant. It's the most basic of breakfast sandwiches, but the flavor balance of the ingredients is chef's kiss and we can't stop ordering them! The Green Omelet. Sauteed mushroom, spinach, asparagus, and mozzarella cheese topped with avocado. It's the asparagus that really kicks the taste up a notch and gives this omelet it's unique flavor. Ask for the potatoes as your side! Iced Vanilla Latte. I don't see it on their website, but they do have it, and it is yummy. Village Pancakes. Buttermilk pancakes with strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and Nutella. Obviously my girls' go to breakfast request. Chicken Fillet Sandwich. Chicken breast, pickle, tomato, lettuce, onion, sauce, cheese, and parsley all come together and just work in this sandwich, and this is coming from someone who typically doesn't do pickles. Our favorite local pet store, Healthy Pet, will be moving into Village Bakery's old location. I love living across from a shopping center with so many great stores, it is such an asset to our community! Village Bakery is open daily from 8 am to 4 pm and is located at 5839 Kanan Rd. You can view their menu here. Brought to you by: Jessica Carter l DRE #01490419 l 818.590.4246 l JessicaCarterHomes@gmail.com "Your Fountainwood neighbor and local area specialist"

  • What's Cookin'? Shrimp Lo Mein

Patricia on Eagleton sent in this delicious recipe that whips up quick for a delicious dinner that is full of flavor. This recipe originally comes from the All-Clad website, though I was unable to find it on there. If you are looking for more recipes to add to your arsenal, definitely check out the website anyway, all of their recipes look amazing! Patricia noted that she frequently uses whatever vegetables she happens to have on hand and that she rarely adds the ginger, meaning this particular recipe is easily adjustable to your specific tastes. For the purposes of this article we stuck to the recipe (save using a wok) and we can safely say it was a hit with the whole family, kids included! Ingredients: 1 pound 26-30 shrimp, peeled and deveined 1 bunch scallions cut into 1-inch pieces 1/4 bell pepper, julienne 1 carrot, julienne 1/2 head broccoli chopped(or other favorite vegetable) 1 cup mushroom sliced 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1 tablespoon minced or shredded ginger 1 cup bean sprouts 1 pound lo mein noodles cooked and drained Vegetable oil for sauteing 1 tablespoon sesame seeds For the Sauce: 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce 2 tablespoon soy sauce 2 tablespoon oyster sauce 2 tablespoon Mirin Rice Cooking wine 1 teaspoon sesame oil Directions: 1. Heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil in the wok and sauté the pepper, carrot, broccoli, and mushroom until just tender. Remove from wok 2. Heat another tablespoon of vegetable oil in the wok and sauté the shrimp until they are just translucent. Remove from wok 3. In a small bowl whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, mirin, and sesame oil 4. Heat another tablespoon of vegetable oil in the wok and add the garlic and ginger, sauteed 1 minute or until fragrant. 5. Add the low mein noodles, sauteed vegetables, and shrimp, stir fry for 1 minute 6. Add the sauce and stir fry until the noodles are well coated and the sauce just begins to thicken. 7. Add the scallion and bean sprouts, toss, and remove from the pan. Garnish with the sesame seeds. PSA: I don't recommend this brand of Lo Mein, but if it is the one you buy you'll want to know that the noodles come bundled into portion sizes. I discovered this when I dumped the entire contents on the package into the water. We had to fish them out and un-bound them, but the damage was already done; our noodles were a clumpy mess. No wok? No problem! We don't have one either and it still turned out delish. But having a wok would have made it A LOT easier. Huge thank you to Patricia for sending this recipe in! • Non-Profit Healthcare For Homeless Animals Serves Agoura Hills Pets in Need

It's likely you've never heard of Healthcare for Homeless Animals, but if you have ever adopted from our local Agoura Animal Care Center your pet may have been the beneficiary of this courageous non-profit organization. Healthcare for Homeless Animals (HHA) works tirelessly everyday to better the health and life of pets at the Agoura Animal Care Center through funding much of the necessary medical treatments. To ensure these hard on their luck pets receive the very best care, HHA funds medical exams, diagnostics, and treatment plans for every animal in need who enters the shelter. But that's not where their help ends, they also fund a hospice program, foster program, and a senior wellness program. It is important to note that while HHA works closely in conjunction with our local Animal Care Center, they are a separate entity who is operated solely by volunteers and is funded entirely by donations and grants. A donation to Healthcare For Homeless Animals will always directly benefit animals right here in our Community of Agoura Hills. Want to help? Click here to make a donation to Healthcare for Homeless Animals! In fact, this month's Up For Adoption featured pet has greatly benefited from this program. Meet Ethan! Ethan is a kitty who likes to test the nine lives theory and has been in the care of HHA since April. Relinquished to the group by his owner after being hit by a car and suffering an open fracture to a hind leg, he hasn't had the easiest go in life. Given the rough start to his short 3 years, he is understandably a little shy at first, but he a sweet boy who's ready for love. His recovery is going well, and it has been decided he is in the clear to start searching for his forever home! Is there room in your home and heart for Ethan? You can schedule an appointment to meet him here, or go to the Agoura Animal Care Center Thursday through Tuesday between 2-4 pm or on Wednesday between 4-7 pm. • That's How The Cookie Crumbls- Crumbl Has Opened in Westlake Village!

Rejoice! Cookie lovers, the day has FINALLY arrived! After what feels like years of being teased that a Crumbl franchise would be opening in Westlake Village, the oven doors have officially opened and my sister can stop her monthly spying on the building for updates. Crumble in Westlake Village is OPEN! Normally we prefer to feature restaurants unique to the area, but we are making an exception this month because we have been big fans of Crumbl since 2019 and we are just so dang excited to finally have one so close to home. For those who have never heard of it, Crumbl is a Utah based cookie chain that is quickly sweeping the nation. Their jumbo sized cookies are sold as single, 4 pack, 6 pack, or 12 pack boxes. Cookies are sold warm, giving them a "fresh from the oven" feel; with exception to the cookies that are best served chilled, of course. What really sets Crumbl apart from their competitors (and is an ingenious marketing move) is their rotating menu. Each week they sell 6 flavors of cookies. You can always count on them to have their warm Chocolate Chip Cookie each week (it's milk chocolate, fyi), but the rest of the cookies are specialty flavors and they change out weekly. Flavors can range from traditional, like Oatmeal Raisin, to exotic, like Waffle. Yes, waffle. Like the breakfast food. It looks like a waffle, tastes like a waffle, and is served with a little pat of whipped butter and a side of maple syrup and is absolutely delicious. It is one of my all time favorite cookies they make. I don't know exact number of specialty cookies they have created, but according to this blog there are over 200. You'll notice most weeks have a running theme of sorts (at the time of writing the theme is "country fair"), and every Sunday their official Instagram account drops a video of the upcoming week's specials that will leave you drooling. As you can imagine, the Westlake shop has been a very popular spot since it's grand opening in July. A short, but at times long, line out of the door is to be expected at the moment, and while they are constantly mixing and baking cookies, they do at times temporarily run out of flavors throughout the day. Supply and demand can be hard to keep up with when it tastes this good! So until the newness wears off, a little patience may be required during your visit. More than just cookies, stores also sell "Crumbl Cream" which is ice cream inspired from popular cookie flavors. And no cookie store would be complete without an abundant supply of milk. They have everything you need to fully enjoy every bite! Crumbl is located at 30768 Russell Ranch Rd in Westlake Village, across from Target. They are open Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 10 pm, and Friday and Saturday from 8 am to midnight. Stores are always closed on Sundays. Try them out and let us know which cookie is your favorite! • August Yard of the Month

Congratulations to Larry and Bonnie over on Pisces, you have been named our Yard of the Month for August! Would you believe this charming front yard was designed and created not by a landscaper, but by Larry and Bonnie themselves? That is right! With exception to a little manual labor to remove the previous landscape, Larry and Bonnie planned and executed this yard with only their two green thumbs. It took them roughly 4 weeks to complete the transformation, and to this day they enjoy making little improvements and tweaks as the need arises. Like many of us, the desire to redo their yard came from wanting to make it more drought tolerant and to take advantage of the Las Virgines Water rebates. They knew they wanted a dry creek bed to trickle down the lawn, and as you can see, this creek spurred the inspiration for much of the design. You'll see "Edgar" the tortoise basking along the bank, as well as other lawn ornaments like toads, cranes, and pelicans. There is even a small wooden bridge connecting the two "banks". One look at this yard and you will feel as though you are standing amongst a lush wetland far away! On either side of the "creek" you will find a bounty of drought tolerant plants. Three Melaleuca Trees trees stand guard, and you will also find Coprosma, Jade Plants, Heavenly Bamboo, and Eugenia, to name just a few. With this many plants, something is always blooming and the garden enjoys a fluid aesthetic as the year progresses. The front yard is fabulous, there is no question there, but beyond the walls and gates of the backyard lies a secret. Larry is a passionate model train enthusiast and their backyard has been transformed into an impressive land of trains! What started as just a small space on the side yard has expanded to encompass much of the outer parameters of the yard. There is a large bridge connecting the side yard to the tracks on the far side of the pool and a village of miniature people can be seen going about their day amongst the tracks. The intricate design is a site to behold and you find yourself wondering what it would be like to be transported into its world. It is evident a lot of care and love has gone into creating this world, and that goes for the front yard as well, of course! You may not be able to see the impressive railway system at their home, but if you hurry over to the Ventura County Fair you can see more of their expertise. Heavily involved with the local model train community, Larry and Bonnie helped build the impressive display at the fair just outside of the Floriculture building and many of their trains are currently there. Thanks again for sharing your home with us, Larry and Bonnie! If you would like to volunteer your home for Yard of the Month, or nominate a neighbor, please send us an email at TheFountainwoodForum@gmail.com! • Restaurant of the Month- Emil's Bake House

Nothing hits the spot quite like a good neighborhood bakery and Emil's Bake Shop fits the bill perfectly. Their pastries are scrumptious and their savory offerings delectable. If you've not yet experienced Emil's for yourself we hope this will be the final push to convince you to give them a try. Warning: Once you've tasted Emil's, you will be going back! Emil's first opened it's doors at it's West LA location in 1962 and they have been serving up high quality European pastries ever since. Three years ago they decided to expand and opened a second location here in Agoura Hills at 5005 Kanan Road. In 2020 the original West LA location was sold and today their Agoura bakery is thriving as the only location of this family owned establishment. Walking in to the store you are immediately greeted by the vast array of individually sized cakes, tarts, muffins, and bread shelves packed to the gills. Our go-to favorites include the Almond Croissants and Bear Claws, but we have yet to try something we didn't like. Everything is made in house using nothing but the finest ingredients, a detail you can taste. Full sized cakes are available for purchase, and custom cake orders are accepted for those special occasions in your life. In the mood for something savory? Try one of their many quiches, a panini, or give the Jalapeno Pretzel Sandwich a go! Much of the menu remains the same day in and day out, but occasionally they will add a seasonal special or different type of quiche to the mix. Every Friday and Saturday Cronuts and Berliners are added to the menu, but get there early because they go quick! If you prefer drinks over treats, you're still in the right place. All coffees are made with Lavazza beans and come in 12 oz or 16 oz options. A selection of Smoothies, Juices, and Italian sodas are also available for purchase. Emil's is open Tuesday through Saturday from 7 am to 6 pm and on Sunday from 8 am to 3 pm. They are CLOSED on Mondays, so don't go then! • Rain, Rain, Go Away

Just kidding, that was click bait, we will gladly welcome all the rain we can get. But oh, my mama, I don't think any of us were prepared for just how much of it has been falling! When a home is not prepared for extreme weather crazy, unthinkable things can happen. We'll never forget the night our childhood home had water dripping out of the ceiling fans and running down the sides of our bedroom walls. We had snow on our roof, which had started to melt, but then it refroze. And then it started to rain. But because we now had ice dams, the water had nowhere to go...so it came into our house. Rural North Carolina life is fun. This was before internet was mainstream (man, that makes us sound old) so we were on our own for figuring out how to deal with such a situation. The result was one wet and wild night no one in our family will ever forget! We don't imagine any of us will ever have to deal with ice dams on our roofs here in Agoura Hills, but we share the story to illustrate that complications due to weather can be unpredictable. And since the best offense is a good defense, what can we do to give our homes the best chance at riding out the storms unscathed? How can we capture and utilize this much needed rain? We have answers to those questions and more, and while we realize this article would have been more beneficial say, two weeks ago, more rain is forecasted to head our way, so better late than never, right? Let's dive in! Pun intended. How to Prepare Your Home For Heavy Rainstorms Check Your Windows and Sliding Doors You of course want to make sure they are tightly shut, and if they are older or you see significant ware and tear on the seals it might be time to call your window guy. Clear Your Drains If it has been awhile since you have had your outdoor drains snaked, you might want to consider a check up. No one wants a non permitted pool to suddenly appear in their backyard. That's a little realtor humor for you. Our drains held up great, but we just inspected them and the grates were full of leaves and dog hair, ick! Took just a few minutes to sort them out. If during these last storms you noticed any flooding concerns that came a little too close for comfort to your home you might want to consider having some sandbags on hand just in case. You can buy them at Lowe's, Home Depot, and most home improvement stores. Clear Your Gutters Make sure they are free of debris, and while you are up there... Check Your Roof for Any Cracked Tiles If anything looks out of order contact your roofer for advice on how to properly cover and secure the issue until they are able to get out there. Secure Loose Lawn Items Make sure all umbrellas are down and anything with the potential to fly (or float) away has been secured or stored elsewhere. Get Trees Trimmed This is a big one. If you are behind on your tree maintenance you will want to get that in order immediately. We have been seeing some crazy photos of damage done by this last storm; you want do everything in your power to ensure that your home is protected from flying branches and wayward trees. Pool Maintenance Rainwater is acidic and will mess with your chemical balance. If you care for your pool yourself, have extra chemicals on hand so you can treat your pool as soon as the rain stops. Turn the system completely off, you can cut the power to it entirely, if desired. Doesn't hurt. If you do not have an overflow in your pool, make sure you have a means to emptying the excess water. We found a great article right here for how to care for your pool during these rainy times. For even more information on the above and beyond, we found this excellent article, and another stellar article is this one right here. How to Harvest Rainwater If it hurts your heart to see all of this glorious moisture go straight down the drains to the ocean, you are not alone. Rain Harvesting is picking up in popularity, and since we live in a desert, it only makes sense. But how does it work? Where do you start? Let's learn together! In Los Angeles city limits new buildings and remodels are actually required to implement stormwater mitigation strategies. The easiest way to meet these requirements is, of course, rain barrels. While we do not yet have this same mandate here in Agoura, it never hurts to get a head start. The barrels themselves are easy enough to purchase, most hardware stores will carry them, and there are a plethora of options available online. Buying the barrels is the easy part. What comes next? How To Install a Rain Barrel Per the Las Virgenes Water District website, these are the steps you will want to follow: Choose where to install your rain barrel. You will want to attach it to a gutter, and you will want it in an area that should it overflow, the water will be diverted a lawn or garden. Place the barrel on a stable, raised surface. You will want to make sure this surface is level and raised, as gravity will assist you when it comes time to use the water. You will also need to secure the barrel to the building with earthquake straps. Install the downspout. Watch the videos or read the instructions straight from the source for this one, there's a hacksaw involved. We're not touching that. Do a test run. Run water through your gutters to ensure the operation is running smoothly. How to Utilize Rainwater You've collected it, now what? Obviously watering lawns and gardens is the easiest way to utilize rainwater. It doesn't have to be treated, and with our limited and inconsistent amounts of rain this makes the most sense. But for those of us who like to go big, with proper care and treatment rainwater can essentially replace tap water in most facets of daily life. Again, rainwater is acidic, so before you venture beyond your garden with it you will want to do some research and learn how to balance the pH levels. Once you have mastered that, go crazy! Fill your pool and fountains, wash the dog, wash your car, pressure wash the house, wash your clothes, wash yourself! You are one with nature now, living off the grid while being a part of the grid. • Restaurant of the Month- SoLé SoupS

We don't know about you, but all of this cold and rainy weather has us craving soup, 24/7. Fortunately for us, that is what Agoura Hills' own SoLé SoupS specializes in! Born in 2012 to a humble Farmer's Market beginning, SoLé SoupS quickly grew in popularity and by 2016 demand was such that they were able to open their first soup studio right here in Agoura Hills. There is now a second location in Thousand Oaks, with rumors of a third location in the works. Quality has been a key factor in SoLé's success. They pride themselves on using high quality, organic ingredients that are locally sourced whenever possible, and free-range, grass-fed meats. The soups are made fresh daily, with a constantly revolving menu of 6-8 options available for in store purchase. Wondering what today's soups are? They update their Instagram everyday with the latest menu, you can find it all at @solesoups. For an example of what flavors you can expect, at the time of writing they are offering: Chicken-Pot-Pie Chowder, Vegan Green Split Pea, and Hearty Beef Chili. And since nothing goes with soup quite like a good salad, it's only natural that SoLé also offers a variety of fresh and flavorful salads that are crafted daily. It's a match made in culinary heaven! You can always pick up hot and ready soup from the studio, or purchase frozen soup to eat at your leisure. With over 30 different flavors of soup offered from the freezer, deciding which one to order will easily be your hardest decision for the day! Since comfort food is best enjoyed in the comfort of your own home, SoLé SoupS is designed to be more of a pick it up and take it home operation, but limited outdoor seating is available if needed. They are open from 11 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday, 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday, and closed on Sundays. You can find them at 28708 Roadside Dr. here in Agoura, or at 1772b E Avenida De Los Arboles in Thousand Oaks. We hope you think they are souper! Hehe, dad jokes. • Yard of the Month, Christmas Edition!

Last month as we were delivering this very newsletter, we came across some neighbors out in their front yard. Hands were flying, gesturing to the roof, the front yard. The conversation looked intense. As we approached them it became clear what was being discussed. It was then that we knew. This had to be our Yard of the Month for December. Afterall, anyone putting this much thought and consideration into their Christmas decorations deserves the honor! They had even recruited a friend to aid in their decision making, this is how serious the situation was. So congratulations to Jamie and Robert Bradley on Aries, you are our Yard of the Month! This is the Bradley's first Christmas in the neighborhood, and they are loving all of the decorated homes and enjoy them as they go out on their evening walks. One of their favorite homes is on one of the cul-de-sacs off of Acadia. Sounds like there is a dental inspired undertone theme to the decorations? We are unsure of which street this home is on, but if cruising the neighborhood looking at Christmas lights is your thing, make sure you include the cul-de-sac streets! Jamie wanted to go full Griswald on their home, but they kept it reined in. For this year, at least. We love the large lights lining the driveway, and the falling snowflakes. Goofy, Donald, Minnie, Mickey, and Pluto can be found out front, and house is fully lined with the classic bold colors of Christmas lights that is sure to induce nostalgia in any 80s kid. This is such a fun time of year, and we are so appreciative to everyone who has taken the time to decorate their homes. It is a lot of work, please know your efforts do not go unnoticed. Whether you have decorated in honor of Christmas, Hannukah, Chrismukkah, or whatever you wish to celebrate, we love it all. We have immensely enjoyed taking drives through our streets at night, it seems there are more decorated homes than ever. A big thank you to everyone who has brightened up our neighborhood this holiday season! And on that note, here is where you can experience even MORE holiday cheer and light displays! Mae Boyer - This adjacent Oak Park neighborhood to our north always has a generous smattering of lights. After you finish driving though Fountainwood, be sure to take Pinewood Street to cross over the Ventura county line to enjoy all our neighbors have to offer. Our Halloween friends over on Middle Crest Drive are at it again, they have a display so bright it is noticeable from TO Blvd. Westlake Village Inn have created a winter wonderland that is not to be missed! Wild Lights and Jungle Nights at America's Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College. From 6 to 8:30 pm each night until December 30th, save Christmas Eve and Day. Prices are $15 for adults, $12 for kids 3-12 and Seniors, free for kids 2 and under. This self guided tour takes 45 minutes and is filled with lights, immersive interactive experiences, and more. Click here for details. Candy Cane Lane by Moorpark High School - If you visit only one light display this year, LET THIS BE THE ONE. We don't want to oversell this display, but...it might not even be possible to put into words how impressive this neighborhood is. It is a must see. Dress warmly, pack a thermos of hot chocolate, and stroll the streets to fully appreciate all the work that has been done here, simply driving through is not enough! To get there, Enter "Clearwood Rd, Moorpark" into your GPS and you will have no problem figuring it out from there. While it is obvious which streets steal the show, last year we found many other homes in the area stepped up their game as well, be sure to take your time and drive around. The Conejo Valley Guide website and Intagram has a complete list of all the impressive displays in our area by private residences. And since they have permission to share this information and we don't, click here to check out their website, scroll down to the heading "Residential and Other Light Displays". May everyone have a happy, safe, and joyous holiday season. We are thankful to have spent yet another year in this fabulous community with you all.
